Final Post: Rubric

In your revised grading rubric, think about what makes a good presentation--what kind of presentations do you enjoy watching, and why?

In a presentation I look for the presenters to speak clearly. They do not always have to project their voice if they do not have a big class, however, the things they are informing up about need to be clear and very well spoken. If a presentation catches my eye when it comes to organization, sources, design, graphics, and how well the words can be seen then the presentation (not always including the presenters) is considered good. Another good point to raise is while watching and listening to a presentation whatever the speaker is talking about or debating must be clear. I must understand what his/her argument is because if I don't me and the rest of the audience will be puzzled and will question what  the main point of your presentation.

Rubric:

Presentation(25 points): When presentation is being shown words must be readable and spelled correctly. Pictures that are posted on the presentation must be clear and appropriate for class. slides or presentation must be well organized and look like it was put together overtime and not overnight.

Clarity of Argument(25 points): Argument and topic must be clear so that the class can understand what you are explaining to them. If what speakers says does not match the presentation points will betaken off.

Correct Use of Source(25 points): If you have used any sources included in make sure each source is sited correctly.

Speakers(25 points): speakers who are presenting must speak clearly and loud enough for their peer to hear them. speaker must show interest and awareness of his/her argument. All language must be class appropriate.

*Note*: If any plagiarism is found you and your team members who knew or took part in this will receive a zero for final grade. No questions asked. No way to make up lost grade.

What is an annotated bibliography? Why do you have to write one for this class?

An annotated bibliography is basically a paper that gives an over view or tells some one about the research you have done. this over view is most likely in the form of a brief summary not really in depth when it comes to details. this summary can include things like articles, books, websites, and photos. When these things are included it is also important to include citations and sources so that you wont be plagiarizing someone else work. each citation will and should be talked about in an annotated bibliography. annotations don not always have to be long, something short and simple so that your readers can get an understanding of why you used that source. I believe we have to write an annotated bibliography to show that we know about the sources we used. It is important that we give information about the sources so it won't seem like we just put anything into out project. This I guess is a sure way of knowing that we have knowledge and understanding of what we researched. we also have to write an annotated bibliography to let the teacher see what we have been looking up and show her that we know enough about our information to teach or to inform others about what we have gathered for our topic and project.

Research Portfolio November 5, 2012

Monday, November 5th: Find at least two credible websites (so, you’ve evaluated them, using our CURRA evaluation criteria) and cite them. Include annotations for each website summarizing the content of the website and how you plan to use it in your research project.

-One of the the websites that I know is credible:

Galileo. Georgia Library Learning Online.  15 september 1995 <http://www.galileo.usg.edu/scholar/westga/subjects/?Welcome>

All of the content on this website is usually credible there are normally up to date. Another thing that is good is that the articles and databases are usually made from good reliable people like researcher, universities, professors, journalists, or others with a high profession that's reliable.

-The second website that is credible:

Google. Google Images. 19 August 2004. <https://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi>

Google when it comes to searching for internet photos ONLY. I mean you could also use flickr or other gallery websites as long as you cite the photo you use for your project. Finding charts for your project on Google would be very helpful as well.

Research Portfolio

1. Find at least one image that you would use in a presentation about your topic and cite it correctly. Also find an additional resource you’d use in your research project (it can be anything!) and include an annotation summarizing the article and how you plan to use it in your research project.

Article:

Hill, Charles. "Digital Piracy: Causes, Consequences, And Strategic Responses." Asia Pacific Journal Of Management 24.1 (2007): 9-25.Business Source Complete. Web. 4 Nov. 2012.

I would you this article because it highlights the consequences and this article also includes charts and statistics that is very reliable because of the site that I got it from. I am using this article from GALILEO. This website it's the safest site you could use when it comes to reliable information. It is sort of like a safety zone whenever you don't know where to look for outside sources.

Please listen to this episode of On the Media: "The Facebook Show":http://www.onthemedia.org/2012/feb/03/
As a citizen of the nation of Facebook (or "Facebookistan"), what are your rights and responsibilities? How does this podcast--and a larger discussion of social media, which includes using blogs--fit within this class?

As a facebookistan my responsibilities is to put real information up about myself like my name
photos etc. I have a right to create groups and to promote certain things. I have a right to some privacy on the website. However, listening to this podcast facebook can change whatever they want about the rules of facebook whenever they want. So this means the limits and the extremes of our rights and responsibilities vary. I guess this discussion fit in to out class because in order for the speakers to have even come up with this podcast they would have had to research. And not only research by online but possibly interviewing people that are all members of facebook. In this podcast several questions are being ask. Some of which are to broad and can't be completely answered and some are narrow which is a bit easy to answer. In all honesty though I do not know how reliable this podcast is even thought they're throwing facts back and forth. How trust worthy are the speakers who are giving us this information or even about the people they are talking with. I'm still left with a bit of questions after listening to this podcast.

Blog Prompt 10/22

Google and facebook are integral parts of many of our lives--many people in this class have expressed the idea that "Google has everything", and that is a popular belief.
Even though we count on these sites to provide us with information, we often don't understand how they actually function, or, for that matter, the ways they potentially manipulate us.

--What is a filter bubble?
--What are the potential personal drawbacks of these filter bubbles?
--What are the potential problems these filter bubbles might cause for your academic research?
--What are some filter bubbles that you've noticed in your own life?

A filter bubble is your own personal bubble of any of your interests you search for online. some of the problem you can have with filter bubbles are that some information could possibly thrown into your search or your filter bubble that may not even be close to any of your interests. some of the potential problems with filter bubble when it comes to academic research is that when you are looking for information you wont get the facts you need. Or the information you need may be over shadowed by random information that you probably would not find interesting or important for the research you are doing. Some if the filter bubbles i use that I just noticed this passed Tuesday is YouTube  I use this filter on a daily bases. I use it so much that when I don't even enter any thing in the search bar related links and videos come up on the side and below the search bar. however, sometimes there are videos that i have never searched for or anything similar to it and they show up. This is the same with Google and sometimes with twitter. Facebook is defiantly not a big part of my life any more because i find even Google is more interesting than it is.

10/17 Wednesday

With all that in mind, discuss in your own words what you consider to be plagiarism. (If you take a direct definition from the source--cite it! If you don’t cite from here on out, you will not get any points on the offending assignment) You might want to include a discussion of the different kinds of plagiarism. What can you do to prevent plagiarism? Include in your discussion something from one of your readings that surprised you.

Plagiarism is basically taking someone else writing or creation and using it for your own benefit with out giving them the credit that is due to them. There are several types of plagiarism. There's full plagiarism which is when a person takes every single detail of some ones writing, idea, or style with out permission. Partial plagiarism is taking several ideas from different authors or from different sources that you find on the internet or in books or wherever you find outside sources. Then you have minimalistic plagiarism is when you have taken a few ideas or some of the authors writing but changed it up a little to make it seem like it's original and that you created it when you didn't. This type of plagiarism is most common with most of the people i know and talk to about writing.  When it comes to preventing plagiarism, in my opinion, it can not be stopped or prevented. Yes, there are consequences for stealing committing this act but there are s=consequences for burglary and murder and people still do it. Plagiarism is pretty hard for me to detect so I wouldn't be able to tell someone not to do it if I was peer reviewing. But I can prevent MYSELF from plagiarism by simply not plagiarizing anything.

PROMPT: Watch or listen to at least 30 minutes of a news show or something similar--or better yet, of the presidential debate on Tuesday!--and find at least one example of the use of a rhetorical device (choose from the list on your handout.) Discuss how the device was used and what you believe it was trying to do (what was it trying to convince you of?)

The Texas sharpshooter: Both Obama and Romney were both cherry picking information when it came to talking about the oil drilling. Since Romney is always lying I assume that he was only trying to convince his audience that Obama wasted a lot of money dealing with the oil.
Straw Man: Romney used this rhetoric when he was trying to argue that Obama did not say that the the attack in Libya was a terrorist attack. Both Khandi and Obama caught him in his lie Which made Romney approach his speech from a different way.
Slippery Slope: Was used when Obama was addressing the question the Jeremy asked about how does he know that he will get a job after graduation i believe. Obama said that it starts with a good education field  then more jobs will be more willing to hire those who are suitable and equipped for that specific job, therefore opening more job opportunities. Obama was trying to explain to Jeremy that jobs wont come easy with out education, but with education there should be some ease when it comes to successfully finding a job.
When it comes to this debate both president and governor were trying to convince the audience to believe that they would be more suitable to be a president which is what they were suppose to do. However, if you pay close attention Romney doesn't have any of his arguments put together. I feel like there's always has to be lies inside his argument which makes me not want to listen to him even speak on television.

Portfolio 10/10

Now that you've done some research, the focus of your research question might have changed. Post your research question here as well as a summary of what your argument is going to be. You have books and articles so far, so also discuss what other kinds of information you need to make your argument. Aim for at least 200 words on this one.

Research Question: What are the negative affects of media piracy on piraters? My argument is that although pirating affects the music, film, digital, and/or the electronic industry it also has negative affects on the ones who commit the crime. Despite the bright side of getting the movies and music for free the bad side is that the people who take part in this crime could get locked up for either a long or short period of time, fined, and have a poor criminal record, which could hurt the possibilities of the getting future jobs. I have researched several articles and books that could potentially help me tell what the negative affects are on the people who do this. The kind of information I need is quite simple. I mostly need research that will prove that there are in fact negative outcomes and affects not only to the producers but to the piraters to. I would use sources that explain the type of consequences given to certain people. When I did my Galileo search I found several helpful articles that helps me make my arguments or my point. I did not find more books than I did articles however the books I did find weren't really as helpful to me as the articles were in my opinion.

Monday 10/8

Find your major discipline in GALILEO (or a discipline that you are interested in) and search that subject page for a database you've never worked in before. Do a search in that database. What do you think of the results you got? What is the difference between searching in a subject specific database and in Discovery (the tool that searches a bunch of databases at once)? When do you think you’d want to use one over the other?

My major discipline is psychology. The database that I searched in is social sciences which is a database I never worked in everyday. The results I found were of course related to psychology but in several different ways. Some of the results were about Behavioral sciences, Nursing, and medicine. For my subject or actually with any subject your search is narrowed and specifically focused on whatever you are looking for, by searching in the discovery bar and using the Boolean search you end up with way more variety that could help you but could also not help you because of the variety of results they give you. Your search won't always be ONLY about the subject you are looking up in a discovery bar other things that don't even pertain to what you are researching may pop up which broadens your results.  Most likely I would use database if I needed straight forward information and a more narrow search I would use the database, however, If I needed more information that was not just about my subject but needed other information that could help me explain my subject I would I would use the discovery  bar for a broader search.

Scholarly/Popular Article

Post at least two articles (one scholarly, one popular) related to your topic. Including a citation in either MLA or APA and an annotation summarizing each article (1-2 sentences) and how you plan to use it in your research project (2-3 sentences.)

It would be useful to you down the road to include summaries that are in your own words. You will not be able to use summaries that are copied from the resource itself in your annotated bibliography.

Scholarly Article(1): Jailhouse Frocks: Locating the Public Interest in Policing Counterfeit Luxury Fashion Goods
British Journal of Criminology November 1, 2010 501094-1116
Summary: "while industry representatives complain of the economic and social harm caused by bootlegging, its effects are more difficult to ascertain and may even have a positive impact upon legitimate sales."
Popular Article(2): Music piracy stunting digital music revenue: industry execCopyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
Summary: "Music pirates remain the IFPI's No. 1 enemy, and the group's report congratulated several countries on their efforts to crack down on illegal file sharing."

How will I use This information? I will use this information and these articles by telling how piracy effects the people that do it. Both piraters, the economy and group of people that are involved in these activities can both benefit and be punished for this act.

Monday Galileo Video

Review the video on GALILEO that is in CourseDen. (You can also view it here) In your own words, what is GALILEO and how does it organize information? What is a database and how does it organize information?

After Watching the video I have a Better understanding of Galileo. Galileo(Georgia Library Learning Online) is simply a search database/library for not only students but any one else searching for books, articles, and films. It organizes information the same way a library does by separating book(by bookshelves and call numbers), articles, films, and etc. This information is easily found by typing in either the name of your subject or key words that are similar to your subject you are researching or curious about. Databases are just grouped articles. They are grouped by topics/subjects so that if you are searching for a particular article you won't get a bunch of random writings/articles, you will get several articles that are about your topic or that is similar to your topic. With this being said, databases or organized the same way as books in the library, however the only difference is that it is online and you don't have any librarians physically helping you find an exact article. Galileo is basically a digital library. So instead of you going to a library and physically checking out a book, you would go o Galileo and get the digital/electronic form of the book/article/film that you want. This is very convenient because this way you do NOT have to get up to go to the library you can just be in the comfort of your own home and search for whatever you like.

Post at least two books related to your topic including citations and an annotation summarizing each book (1-2 sentences) and how you plan to use it in your research project (2-3 sentences).

Peer to Peer and the music industry: The criminalization of sharing.

Summary: "This penetrating and informative book provides readers with the perfect systematic critical guide to the file-sharing phenomenon. Combining inter-disciplinary resources from sociology, history, media and communication studies and cultural studies, Matthew David unpacks the economics, psychology, and philosophy of file-sharing. It fuses a deep knowledge of the music industry and the new technologies of mass communication with a powerful perspective on how multinational corporations operate to monopolize markets, how international and state agencies defend property, while a global multitude undermine and/or reinvent both."

How Will I Use It: I plan on using certain information in the book for my research project. This book seem like it has several good facts and statistics in it. thought this will not be my only resource if I was looking for a book to help me this would be a good choice.

Pop song piracy: Disobedient music distribution since 1929

Summary: "The music industry’s ongoing battle against digital piracy is just the latest skirmish in a long conflict over who has the right to distribute music. Starting with music publishers’ efforts to stamp out bootleg compilations of lyric sheets in 1929, Barry Kernfeld’s Pop Song Piracy details nearly a century of disobedient music distribution from song sheets to MP3s."

Monday

After reading the relevant articles in this week's folder, and keeping in mind the discussion we’ve had in class about scholarly information, describe the peer-review process. In your response, answer the following questions:
-Why is peer-review important?
-What are some ways that you can tell if an article is peer-reviewed, or scholarly?
-When do you want to use peer-reviewed research in your work?
-Also think about in what ways YOU engage in informal and/or formal peer-review in your personal and researching life

Peer reviewed research can be the very reason why you get an "a" or "c" on a paper or assignment. Peer review is very important because you need someones perspective on your writing instead of your own. If you are writing a paper or doing a project you want to get constructive criticism on it so that you can better the work that you are working on. Ways that you can tell if an article is scholarly is by the author, the  audience the article is intended for, references, and the length. You would want to use peer reviewed research in your work when you are talking about certain subjects. All depending what topic you might not want to use peer reviewed research like if you were talking about the government you would want straight facts no peer review needed for your research you would not necessarily need peer reviewed research. I have not used peer review for any of my researching but for other assignments like a papers and certain projects it came in handy because I needed criticism and help on what I may have done wrong and in order to improve my work I let several people review my work.

Discussing Resources

Discuss how you would use each of the types of information we discussed in class today (scholarly books, popular magazines, newspapers, government documents, encyclopedia, and scholarly journal articles) in the research project you are working on in our class.

My group is working on "piracy" issue for our project. Because of the topic we have it would be sort of difficult to use some of the listed resources above. However, I will try my best. Right off the top I would exclude scholarly books, encyclopedia, government documents, and possibly scholarly journal articles. I automatically excluded these resources because they would not have the kind of information I am trying to learn about when it comes to "piracy". On the other hand popular magazines should have some type of articles or selection in them that may talk about pirating. Whether it be from people who got caught doing such crime, or whether it's about people who are getting hurt financially because of pirating. Newspapers are another good source of research for our topic. Newspaper has been out for quite sometime now, so it should be fairly easy to track a newspaper with some information OR article about this crime. I say this because piracy isn't something that has just started. So a lot of people know about it which mean most journalists know about it to. Even though I only gave two resources listed, for my groups sake there is no better resource than the internet. This is a guaranteed way of getting the information we need for our research project.

Topic Question& Debate

Yes I did change my research question. My research NEW research question asks "what are the positive affects of media piracy on piraters? By changing up my question I made my research question more narrow. In the begging My question was "what are the positive and negative affects of piracy on society as a whole? This question was definitely to broad and could have been and was narrowed. I decided to change my question around because this way I have a question that focuses on one specific thing and not several different points. I also changed my question because now there can be two different views on this question. Any one could agree or disagree with what I'm trying to research. It is not just a one sided question. This renewed question will lesson my chance of having extra and unneeded information for my research. To answer my research question I would most likely stick with the internet and any articles that I can find on this topic. Photos and other visual aids, with the exception of statistical graphs, would do me no good. The reason is because see piracy on a photo or movie would not help my argument at all.

THE DEBATE:
The debate was very interesting. I can honestly say that I understood where both sides are coming from. However, I think I would agree more with UWG's perspective. UWG's perspective was that you should not choose to go to an HBCU because of the long-term affects, which are: loan debt, being most likely to default on your loan which in turn keeps you from getting a credit card, house, car, and most importantly a job, and being the last result when it comes to getting hired and when you do get a job there will be a decrease in wages. UWG also argued that what you learn at an HBCU you can also learn at a Non-HBCU and that African-American students make HBCU's it is not the other way around. I highly agree with every point that UWG mad e I have no disagreements with them whatsoever. On the other side you had Clark Atlanta college. Their argument was going to and HBCU school could help you with the following: learn about your own culture, and that you could possibly prevent black on black crime because HBCU'S teach how to love your brotherhood and sisterhood. I feel like Clark Atlanta should have came up with more reasons on why choosing and HBCU is better if you're an African american student. It seemed like Clark was not fully prepared like UWG was. UWG could answer ANY question that Clark threw at them but it doesn't seem like it was the other way around. I also want to point out that the conversation got a bit heated because you could clearly see who the winning side was early on in the debate. In my opinion as well as the rest of the school UWG won because they were prepared and you could see that they took the time to research everything they needed to debate.

Topic: Piracy

My research question is How does media piracy affect people in general as a society. I personally think this is a good research question because piracy has been going on for ages. This research question is a good one because if you need to find something on the internet about it or even in book you would be able to find it with out a problem. Even though some people have their opinion about whether or not piracy is good or bad there are still facts out there that wouldn't be debatable. So far media piracy affects society in several ways. The people who commits this act normally gets fine and in some cases may get taken away and sentenced to serve time. Other people like music producers and movie directors has been loosing money ever since piracy began. I would like to research more about which directors and producers has been affected the most by piracy. This interests me because I know that that the individuals making the music and movies and big money makers. Knowing exactly how bad piracy is affecting them would be nice to know. Maybe piracy isn't that much of an affect but maybe it is. This is something I have to know more about.

Group Topic

My group decided to choose "piracy" as our topic. I feel the reason you made us chose our topic this way so that we could know the difference between a good topic and a not so good topic. When picking our topic we had tons of information to research from. It wasn't hard to find facts about i at all which makes writing or researching a our topic more easier. The most interesting aspect of the subject my group picked is the fact that so many people are stealing  from the greatest directors and producers of all times and there's almost nothing that can be done about it. Even though the law states that it's illegal and that their will be punishment there hasn't really been any real enforcement to make teens and adults stop. Even though piracy is basically another word for stealing everyone or almost everyone has engaged in this activity.

An Important Acronym

Sponsor
Credentials
Author
Reliability
Factual

Sponsor is important when it comes to looking up information on the website or any other place because if you do not have sponsoring nine times out of ten you will not have a good website to post things on. without the sponsorship the website or the information you are researching would not have stable support.
Credentials are important because they show evidence that what you are reading is actually true which could also tie in to why "Factual" is also an important part of researching thing. The author is very important. When you are looking up things on the internet, you don't want to read work from any one. You would benefit more from a person who is well known or who has credibility. Most likely if you are looking up an author that is well known and has good reviews the information you use from that author would probably be right and could more then likely be backed up with hard facts. Reliability would have to be one of the most important words in this acronym. What good is using a source that isn't reliable. If you're writing a paper and have several unreliable resources in it your paper would be far from the truth. You don't want to put false information in your writing. Make sure most of the things you ise are reliable and can be backed up with other sources.

Any Confusion

I am not confused confused about anything when it comes to the space and library services. When it comes to things I'm excited about learning and doing one would be working in groups and creating fun presentations. Meeting new people and being able to work together is a bonus. I am also interested in learning about this new blogging process. To get someones feedback on my blog is really cool. Me being able to respong to someonelese blog is also a fun way of communicting to one another. I am very excited to see how this semester goes.

Intro Blog

Hey guys!!

I was born and raised from Atlanta Georgia. I have never lived anywhere else. My current major is Psychology. However, I plan on changing that to something like Anthropology or Sociology. I have yet to make my mind up. I am taking this class because I needed more than 11 credits so that I can be a full time student. I have always wanted to learn more about cars and everything about them like motors, tires, batteries, and anything else you can think of I want to know about. A fun fact about me is that I am seriously in love with food and hair. I love long natural hair from all races I think it's so interesting and pretty. I don't eat just any kind of food, but the food I do eat I eat a lot of. I think I may be addicted to hot wings. I can't stop eating them. These are just some small facts about me!!
